Ozzie Smith is one 3 Hall of Famers drafted and developed by the Padres (Dave Winfield and Tony Gwynn are the others). He nickname The Wizard of Oz because of his first name and his defensive "wizardry". He made some dazzling highlight reel plays for the Padres before they were forced to trade him before he became a free agent. The bulk of his Hall of Fame career came in a St. Louis Cardinals uniform following a trade that returned Gary Templeton, Sexto Lezcano and Luis DeLeon. Obviously, none of the players the Padres received in return could compare to the 15 time All Star and 13 time Gold Glove shortstop.
