In 1992, the Padres acquired OF Phil Plantier for P Jose Melendez.
In 2004, the Padres brought home OF Dave Roberts in exchange for INF Ramon Vasquez, OF Jay Payton and P David Pauley. It was a steep price to pay for an older player that was never a starter for prolonged periods, but it paid off when he helped the Padres to NL West Division titles in 2005 and 2006.
In 2005, the Padres foolishly traded 2B Mark Loretta to the Red Sox in order to burden themselves with C Doug Mirabelli
In 2006, the Padres shipped C Doug Mirabelli back to Beantown and got back two players that would help them to an NL West Division title in RP Cla Meredith and C Josh Bard.
In December 2010, the Padres cashed in 1B Adrian Gonzalez in exchange for P Casey Kelly, 1B Anthony Rizzo, UT Eric Patterson and prospect OF Reymond Fuentes.^[1]^[2]^[3]
